Death of colleague Burt Budin...Producer Director

I have just heard of the death of Burt Budin...from Colleague Micheal Johnston.

Who writes  "Burt was one of the first Producer/Directors in RTE Television when it started up on NewYear's Eve 1961 (or was it 1962?).  Most of them were from overseas, a few like myself came home, and there was a large group on a crash training course from many branches of Irish life.  Burt worked to start with on light entertainment
shows with musicians like Earl Gill, I'm reasonably certain he was the first
director of the Late, Late Show, and later he was an accomplished OB
director with RTE Sports.

He was the lead director of the coverage of John F. Kennedy's visit to
Ireland in 1963, and I was one of the others who joined him over those
exciting days.  RTE had begged, borrowed and hired equipment from the BBC,
ITV and whoever else had in those early days.  Burt did Dublin Airport for
the President's arrival;  I did Aras an Uachtarain.  On Day I covered the
quayside in New Ross, while Burt Was at the historic family homestead in
Dunganstown.  On day 3 I was in Cork for his address to the South, while
Burt scuttled back to Dublin to head up the coverage from Dail Eireann,
Leinster House.  On the 4th day we joined up again, to get best value from
the extra coverage at our disposal, and to have two OB units at the Curragh
for the Irish Sweeps Derby. By this stage the President was on his way home
to the States.  Who remembers who did not win the race that day? Or indeed
who won it?
Sandra Budin, one with Karen, of Burt and Fran's twin daughters, e-mailed my
son Josh on Sunday 8th November to say her father 'Burt Budin had died last
week'. And later she added: 'There isn't going to be a funeral at his
specific request. We're having him cremated and then at some point we will
scatter his ashes at Moortown Golf Club, which he was a member of for so
many years and which was a game he loved.'

Micheal Johnston

(Many thanks Micheal for the above. Funeral arrangements to follow..CB

"I Created Dracula"

Ian Graham RTS-ROI Center Presentation

Filmmaker Ian Graham in October made a unique presentation to members and guests of the ROI Centre of the RTS.  The title of Ian’s presentation was “I Created Dracula -  the life and times of Bram Stoker”  Very suitably we were approaching Halloween and our RTÉ  venue was embellished with suitable green mood lighting.  Ian has a Masters in Film Studies from UCD  and  a number of major films to his credit.

Ian explained, having shown his film,  that it explored the life and times of gothic writer Bram Stoker, with a particular emphasis on the elements which inspired the Irishman, to create the classic vampire character, in his novel published in 1897.

Ian told us “I made this film about a Dubliner, who created an international character, but who himself appeared to be obscure.  Bram Stoker had been eclipsed by his own creation, Count Dracula, so it was interesting to explore Stoker’s complex life, and show his various accomplishments, beyond the famous book. “

There is much emphasis in the film, on Stoker’s work with the celebrated actors, Sir Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, at London’s famed Lyceum theatre.

In 1864 Stoker entered Trinity College Dublin. While attending college he began working as an Irish civil servant. He also worked part time as a free lance journalist and drama critic. In 1876 he met Henry Irving, a famous actor, and they soon became friends. Not long after that, Stoker met and fell in love with an aspiring actress named Florence Balcombe. In 1878 Stoker accepted a job working in London as Irving's personal secretary.

Apart from this presentation and tribute film on Bram Stoker  “I created Dracula”  ..and a film on our former colleague James Plunkett Kelly of Strumpet City fame,  Ian has a formidable CV of work as a Filmmaker.   He has Directed four major films on James Joyce.  He has made the definitive film on Irish Director Rex Ingram..  and Directed a film on  Jonathan Swift.  CB

Start the Week With a  Smile... with thanks to colleague Maurice Byrne

An elderly Italian gentleman who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy, went to the local church for confession.  When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, the man said "Father, during World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighbourhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis.  So I hid her in my attic.”
The priest replied: "That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that.”
"There is more to tell, Father. She started to repay me with sexual favours. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays.”
The priest said, "That was a long time ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weaknesses of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven.”
"Thank you, Father. That's a great load off my mind. I do have one more question.”
"And what is that?" asked the priest.   "Should I tell her the war is over...?''

That's all for now ...have a good week...CB
