Funeral of Bishop Edward Daly Former RTÉ Religious Adviser..

President Michael D Higgins was among the dignitaries attending the funeral of former Bishop of Derry Edward Daly.  A former RTÉ religious adviser in the 1970's.

Dr Daly died on Monday 8th August 2016 after a brief illness aged 82. He served as religious advisor in RTÉ for a number of years in the '70s.  Our deepest sympathy to his family, friends and the people of Derry.

He was buried following requiem mass in Saint Eugene's Cathedral in Derry at 3.30pm on Thursday 11th August 2016.

Bishop Daly was filmed waving a bloody handkerchief on Bloody Sunday

The events on what became known as Bloody Sunday in January 1972 changed the life of Fr. Daly .

He was filmed, waving a blood-stained handkerchief, as he tried to assist the mortally wounded 17-year-old Jackie Duddy after paratroopers opened fire during a civil rights march killing 13 unarmed civilians.  A fourteenth man died later from his injuries.

His accounts of what he saw influenced international opinion as well as sealed his relationship with the people of Derry.

At the time Dr Daly was a 39-year-old curate at St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry and joined the march as it passed the cathedral en route to the city centre.

He was near Jackie when he was shot by soldiers and anointed him and gave him the Last Rites.

Among those attending  the requiem mass included Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and Kris Hopkins MP representing the British government.

Bishop of Derry Donal McKeon, the Derry-born Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin and former Primate Seán Brady were  among those con-celebrating the requiem mass.

It was also an occasion for the people of Derry to say their farewell to a man who earned their affection as well as their respect.  Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

The Radharc Awards were established in 2002 to honour the memory of Fr. Joe Dunn and Radharc’s achievements in religious affairs programmes for Irish television from 1962 to 1997, and to encourage similar quality documentary production in Ireland today.

Free Ukulele Festival in Dun Laoghaire...

Our colleague Tony Boland is the Festival Director for the above and sends this information for our colleagues..  The 2016 Ukulele Hooley is in Dun Laoghaire on August 20th and 21st 2016.

It's a free family event that happens in the Peoples Park Dun Laoghaire with a seven hour concert featuring some of the best ukulele players from all over the world.

Tony tells us that they started the festival in 2009 and it was the first ukulele festival in Europe.  Since then it has grown each year and all the hotel & guesthouse accommodation is booked out for the festival before Christmas each year.
The Ukulele Hooley is a work of love by the volunteer organisers. Tony best wishes to you and your committee for the festival... CB
