Louis Stewart Remembered..
It is with great sadness we learned on Saturday 20th August 2016 of the death of Musician, Guitarist and colleague Louis Stewart. Many of us would have worked with Louis over the years in both Radio and Television. Born in Waterford, Louis began his professional career performing in Dublin showbands. In 1968 he performed at the Montreux International Jazz Festival with Irish pianist Jim Doherty and received the 'Outstanding European Soloist' award. Stewart was subsequently offered a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, which he turned down. He joined Benny Goodman's band in 1970. Louis Stewart resided in Dublin. He received an honorary doctorate from Trinity CollegeDublin in 1998. In 2009 he was elected to Aosdána, an Irish affiliation of artists engaged in literature, music and visual arts, established by the Irish Arts Council in 1981 to honour those whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland. Through the course of his career, Stewart worked alongside Benny Goodman, George Shearing and Tubby Hayes, and performed as part of Ronnie Scott's quartet and quintet for many years. In the 1970s Stewart began working with Canadian orchestrator Robert Farnon. They went on to record at least 10 albums together. Most recently in 2013, Louis recorded an album of duets, Tunes, with life-long friend Jim Doherty. CB

RTÉ documentary captures Irish health system in a day

Keeping Ireland Alive: The health service in a Day debuts on RTÉ One on Monday 28th August 2016 after the main evening News at 9.35.
A major new five part documentary series which chronicles Ireland's health system over a 24-hour period will air on RTÉ One later this month. Keeping Ireland Alive: The Health Service in a Day involved 75 camera crews at locations nationwide and which aims to give viewers unprecedented access to every aspect of the country’s health service. Filming was carried out over a 24-hour period on May 31 this year, and crews were given access to all aspects of the health service, with the co-operation of the Health Service Executive, hospitals, and community services throughout the country. Every day more than 200,000 people access the health service in Ireland, 200 babies are born, and 80 people die. Over the course of filming, camera crews nationwide captured the experiences of a diverse range of staff and a steady stream of patients as they accessed care that day.
Keeping Ireland Alive: The Health Service in a Day starts on RTÉ One on Monday, August 29th at 9.35pm and will air throughout September. The documentary will be a key part of the new RTÉ Autumn/Winter schedule, details of which will be announced on Monday next.

Along with returning favourites such as The Late Late Show and First Dates Ireland will be new shows, including Daniel and Majella's B&B Road Trip which moves from UTV Ireland, the new Amy Huberman legal drama Striking Out , a new six-part comedy Can't Cope Won't Cope about the lives of two twenty-something Cork women and the much-anticipated Irish version of Dancing With The Stars.

Rose of Tralee Bans Poems....

A spokesperson for the Rose of Tralee festival says the decision to ban poetry party-piece's from this year's TV shows was made in a bid to keep "momentum" and to "keep the show moving".
Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Rose of Tralee International Festival spokesperson John Drummey, says the decision to ban the recital section will be reviewed again in two years.
"Last year there were 14 poems over the two nights and while they were all very good and the Roses go to great trouble to write them, they actually slow down the momentum of the show," Drummey said.
"We are trying to keep the show moving and keep the entertainment levels high. It's not that we had anything against poetry because it is very very cultural and very artistic. In terms of this year we are trialling it out for a couple of years to see how it goes.
Bye bye poetry, hello singing this year
In 2013 the Darwin Rose almost had the audience and viewers asleep after reading Nick Blend's bedtime story, The Very Cranky Bear, as her party piece. Her performance involved tucking Dáithí Ó Sé into a bed, who later joked that he was about to "doze off".
The Rose of Tralee live shows, presented by Daithí Ó Sé, will take place on August 22 and 23 from the Festival Dome on RTÉ One at 8pm.

Aware "Beat The Blues" Ball To Be Held Saturday 8th October 2016..

My sister Annette tells me that "AWARE" are to hold a corporate fundraising ball on Saturday 8th October 2016 in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. This year they are hosting a "Beat the Blues Ball" in order to raise much needed funds for Aware, to continue delivering their schools programme. Details are attached, and with Oliver Callan performing and acting as MC, and some great entertainment lined up, it’s promising to be an enjoyable, entertaining and uplifting event!
Start the Week with a smile..
A woman gets a job in a chemist's shop. She's a bit embarrassed at first because she has to deal with men asking for condoms. After a while the chemist tells her she doesn't need to be embarrassed any more because Durex have brought out a new system. They now code their condoms. Small condoms are now 420, medium are now 430, and large are now 440. That's better, she says, I won't be as embarrassed now.
Soon after, a man comes in and when the shop is empty, goes to the counter and says "450 please". The woman is puzzled, goes to he back room and says to the chemist, "there's a man in the shop asking for 450. What do I do ?" The chemist says to her, "has he got a yellow bucket ?" She says yes. The chemist says "pay him, he's the window cleaner !"
