ANNUAL COMMEMORATIVE MASS FOR DECEASED COLLEAGUES

The annual Commemorative Mass for deceased staff will take place on Wednesday 2nd November  2016 at 1.00 p.m. in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook.

Music will be by RTÉ - Cór Na nÓg

As RTÉ has evolved in recent years into separate IBDs, it is timely to note that this Commemorative Mass for deceased colleagues and former staff,  is the one occasion when people from all divisions with retired colleagues,  gather to remember and honour those who have preceded us and whose work helped to create and maintain the organisation.

We will particularly remember those who died in the past twelve months.

All retired staff are invited to attend in remembrance of our former colleagues and to offer support to their families.   CB

Colleague Shane Kenny  RTS- ROI  Presentation

The  Republic of Ireland centre of the RTS were delighted to welcome Journalist and Broadcaster Shane Kenny to give his presentation on a TV  Documentary he has made, on his personal experiences of using the Benzodiazepine drug family.

Shane has an impressive CV …he was  the first Editor of RTÉ’s  flagship Radio One News Features programme “Morning Ireland”.     Since then he has had a most interesting career as Irish Government Press Secretary and spokesperson for the Irish EU Presidency in 1996.  Most recently Shane has become a TV documentary Producer.

Shane in his presentation showed  us an excerpt from the Documentary he has produced about the effects of drugs prescribed for,  in his case,   the  treatment of “Meniere’s” - an inner ear disease..   Shane described this  lurking disaster, which he says could happen to you or me, or anyone who goes to the doctor with a problem and gets a  prescription for this type of medication.  In an even more complicated medical world with an array of new drugs arriving on the market every year there’s a demand from ill people,  for medication to deal with almost every condition   ”a pill for every ill..” you might say.

Shane in his documentary tells  his story of how prescribed drugs turned  a manageable, relatively mild condition, into a disabling , life threatening illness.

Shane told the audience that this film provides an important warning to help save others go through what he has  suffered. In a busy world , moving fast and changing constantly, it’s important that people try to inform themselves fully about medications they are offered, in case the panacea turns into the real illness.

There was a large audience of RTS members and guests, among whom  were some who told their stories as to how they also had been affected by the use of these prescription drugs. Shane continued that the Benzodiazepine Medical Disaster is the story of a hidden tragedy. Valium, Librium, Xanax and Ativan are familiar tranquillisers drugs, dubbed “mothers little helper”, Valium became one of the world’s biggest selling drugs in the 1960’s.  The commonly perceived problem about these prescribed drugs was that some people became addicted to their soothing , tranquillising effects.   But the reality for Shane he explained is that for him benzodiazepines were  extremely dangerous, as he seemed to be acutely sensitive to them. The British Medical Association (BMA) have given Shane an exclusive statement for his programme where they accept that Benzodiazepines can cause short term as well as long term harm and that there is not enough research on the effects of these drugs and they want more research done in the area.

It is estimated that many have side affects from these drugs that last after the drugs are stopped.  Nobody knows precisely because the essential research has not been done.

On the positive side Shane told us that In Britain two outstanding academics scientists have tried for decades to get the medical profession to recognise the dangers of these drugs.   Prof. Malcolm Lader and Prof. Heather Ashton.. The later has published what is considered the manual on benzodiazepine withdrawal… this documentary also tells of their  work. CDB

Our thanks to colleague Cathy Halloran for sending these photos and tributes to Anthony Foley at Thomomd Park---all rugby fans devastated and shocked at the news of his sudden death. One fan told me ...its the saddest day ever to put on a Munster jersey.

Our sympathy to the Foley family... Thanks Cathy...
