                                                                           A Note from Dee Forbes

It’s been another very strong week for RTÉ.

Yesterday’s JNLR results revealed that RTÉ continues to reach almost 2 million listeners with over half of the adult (15+) population tuning in to listen to our radio programmes every week, while RTÉ Radio 1 broadcasts 19 of top 20 radio programmes (adults 15+) nationwide and has a weekly reach of over 1 million.

As Jim Jennings commented yesterday, it is wonderful to see RTÉ radio maintain a central role in the lives of our listeners, who continue to respond in such huge numbers across all demographics. This comes on the back of RTÉ Radio 1’s Documentary on One: The Case That Never Was being awarded the top prize of ‘Best European Radio Investigation’ at this year’s Prix Europa Awards; the preeminent competition for European media, which was presented to Liam O’Brien and Frank Shouldice at an awards event in Berlin last Friday.

On Tuesday, Dermot Horan, interim Managing Director, Television hosted a quarterly update at which it was revealed that RTÉ One and RTÉ2 have enjoyed a 5% increase in audience share year-to-date, another great result.

RTÉ has produced some truly wonderful television content this year across drama, comedy, factual, news and current affairs, entertainment and sport and it’s great to see such a positive response to both new content, such as Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope and Bridget and Eamon and more established favourites, such as The Late Late Showwhich has enjoyed a great week out on the road meeting young Late Late Toy Show hopefuls. There’s so much more great content to come, both this year and next which I’m very excited about.

As I said at the MDTV staff update, RTÉ is now competing in a very challenging market, so it is important that we plan well for our future. And while we will continue to make changes to the organisation in the short term, which bring us closer together and make us stronger, such as the restructuring of our commercial trading operations which we announced last week, we are also now working on RTÉ’s next five-year plan, which we are required to do by the BAI. This plan will allow us to fully consider how we can ensure that RTÉ is best placed to play an even stronger role at the centre of Irish life in the years ahead. For those of you who are keen to know more about the planning process, we have just posted this simple guide – Five-year Plan: 5 things to know – on The Hub

I also reiterated on Tuesday that I want to hear from you about the things you feel would help the organisation or improve your role. With that in mind, as part of the five-year planning process, we are inviting staff to share their thoughts and/or signal a desire to participate in the process.  We’d love to hear from you.

Finally, I’d like to wish Kevin Bakhurst all the very best and thank him for his great contribution to RTÉ and also for his support during my first few months at RTÉ. As Kevin moves onto an exciting new role with Ofcom back in London, he can do so in the knowledge that he has left a very strong legacy here at RTÉ and made a lasting impression. We expect to announce Kevin’s successor shortly In the meantime, I’d like to thank Hilary McGouran who has agreed to take on the role of Interim Managing Director News & Current Affairs.

Thanks,
Dee

Director-General

Two Managing Editors appointments for RTÉ News

I’m pleased to confirm that after a very competitive interview process, we have made the following newsroom appointments:

Deirdre McCarthy will be the New Managing Editor, Radio News Programmes and Regions with responsibility for the Regions and for Morning Ireland, News at One, This Week and World Report.

Alongside Hilary McGouran, Managing Editor of TV News this gives News a very strong editorial and management team.

RTÉ’s “incredible story” wins Best European Radio Investigation at Prix Europa 2016

RTÉ Radio 1 Documentary is “a David versus Goliath story in the arena of the European Court.”

RTÉ Radio 1’sDocumentary on One: The Case That Never Washas been awarded the top prize for ‘Best European Radio Investigation’ at this year’s Prix Europa Awards; the preeminent competition for European media.

The Prix Europa deciding jury said:“An incredible story: hard to believe yet true, told in a sober and at the same time humorous way. This is a very well researched documentary; a David versus Goliath story in the arena of the European Court – but it appears that David does not even know that he is in the arena. Thanks to the work of the reporter, a fraudulent court case was stopped and European legislation was prevented from being changed on an erroneous basis.”

The award was presented to the producers of the winning documentary, Frank Shouldice from the RTÉ Investigations Unit and Documentary On One’s Liam O’Brien, at a ceremony in Berlin on Friday 21st October. The documentary was the only Irish winner in this year’s competition.

RTÉ Head of Arts and Cultural Strategy, Lorelei Harris, says:“Investigative journalism is at the heart of RTÉ’s public service remit. I am thrilled that the contribution of the Documentary on One team to the fulfilment of this important responsibility has been recognised by the Prix Europa. Documentary on One: The Case That Never Was produced by Frank Shouldice and Liam O’Brien, shines much-needed light on a loophole in European social insurance practices and highlights the plight to which this gives rise for thousands of European migrant workers.”

Documentary on One: The Case That Never Wasbecame one of the most in-depth and far-reaching investigations RTÉ Radio 1 has ever undertaken. It told the story of an Irish recruitment company – and a Polish man who became unwittingly involved in a landmark European legal case. Heard at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the case centered around social insurance. The decision handed down from this case, at the highest court in Europe, would change legislation and impact all EU citizens. However, due solely to investigations uncovered within the radio documentary, the case was exposed as bogus and eventually withdrawn.

Since the documentary aired, criminal proceedings have begun as to how this case even came into existence.

Wednesday, 26th October, 2016: What do opera singing dogs, weather forecasting goats, the seventh son of a seventh son, a fairy tree, a hunt for monsters in the lakes of Connemara, a UFO in Mullinahone, travelling by steamroller from Longford to Dublin, a pub crawl, stretcher race and magician priest who balances his niece on a sword all have in common?  They are all among the oddities captured by RTÉ through the decades which will feature as part of the Weird and Wonderful collection, specially created by RTÉ Archives to mark the UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on Thursday 27th October.

RTÉ Archives, the largest audiovisual archive collection in Ireland, has decided to mark the day by delving into the vaults to bring audiences a unique ‘Weird and Wonderful’ collection of  fifteen videos, which illustrate some eccentricities and nuances of Irish life in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

The Weird and Wonderful collection is presented on RTÉ Archive’s website http://www.rte.ie/archives/weirdandwonderful, where content from the archives is published on a daily basis. So far this year, over 1,000 stories have been made available with the site attracting 1.4 million visits to date in 2016. To keep up with the latest stories from the archives follow @RTEArchives on Facebook and Twitter.

Liam Wylie, Curator at RTÉ Archives said“We really enjoyed putting the Weird and the Wonderful collection together. It is a presentation of some of the more offbeat or bizarre stories of Irish life captured by RTÉ that will make you smile. We also hope it will make you think about the value of preserving audiovisual content for the future.”

Consisting of Ireland’s largest audio visual collection, with over 650,000 thousand hours of moving image and sound recordings together with significant collections of photographs, manuscripts and administrative documents, RTÉ Archives maintains and preserves a unique record of Irish life in the interest of the Irish public.

UNESCO declared October 27 as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to raise awareness of the significance of AV documents and to draw attention to the need to safeguard them.  Every year, activities are organised by different institutions worldwide around a theme.  The theme for 2016 is “It’s Your Story – Don’t Lose It”

Commenting on the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, Bríd Dooley, Head of RTÉ Archives and newly elected President of the international audio visual professional representative organisation FIAT/ IFTA said“Thearchives abound with stories which clearly connects our audiences everywhere. UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is a great opportunity to showcase the importance of keeping these memories intact for future generations and to shine a light on the fantastic work of the audiovisual archive sector and the continued need for funding to preserve these precious collections.”  Many thanks to colleague Marika McCarvill for sending the above..  CB
