Dee Forbes - RTÉ Director-General visits TG4, RnaG and RTÉ Galway Studios

1.    ( L-R Eibhlín ní choisdealbha Nuacht, Alan Esslemont Director General TG4, Dee Forbes Director General RTÉ, Michael Lally, Head of Nuacht RTÉ/TG4, Eimear Ní Chonaola Nuacht)

RTÉ’s new Director General Dee Forbes visited TG4 in Baile na hAbhann, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in Casla, and the RTÉ Galway City Studios last week, to meet with management and staff in the Western Region.

In TG4 offices she looked at the new AVID broadcast system in the RTÉ Nuacht headquarters in Connemara, which went live in October. The system makes the Nuacht operation in Baile na hAbhann completely compatible with RTÉ News in Donnybrook, allowing remote access to Nuacht HQ and to Donnybrook. The system also enhances the provision of material and content for online publishing and radio.

The RTÉ Nuacht service produces three TV bulletins a day, including the TG4 main evening news as well as the 5.45pm bulletin for RTÉ One and the 5.00pm bulletin for RTÉ News Now.

(L-R Dee Forbes Director General RTÉ, Edel Ni Chuireain Ceannaire RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Ronan Mac ConIomaire RTÉ Group Head Irish Language)

At RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in Casla, Dee Forbes spoke with assembled staff and was shown around the studio facilities and newsroom.  She also visited the RTÉ Galway Studio at the Hynes Building in Galway city centre which sees staff from RTÉ News, Radio Operations, Nuacht, Raidió na Gaeltachta and Nationwide avail of the offices and facilities.

Joe Taylor RTS Presentation  to the  RTS ROI Centre

Tuesday 6th December 2016 CB

We all remember Joe Taylor’s fascinating re-creations of some of the most sensational revelations in the history of the Irish State which provided a unique eyewitness account for a nation gripped by the scandals of political corruption, while also showcasing his own unique talent as an actor.

The extraordinary evidence of the likes of Charles Haughey, Bertie Ahern, James Gogarty, Tom Gilmartin, Ray Burke, Liam Lawlor, George Redmond. Ben Dunne and Frank Dunlop among others was relayed to the nation by Joe’s innovative and precise re- creations. Although the electronic and print media devoted acres of air time and newsprint to the Tribunals of the ’80 and ‘90s , it was Joe Taylor who gave the evidence a recognisable and easily digested voice.

Joe’s presentation to the RTS ROI  “TV Blitzkrieg”  is based almost entirely on the novel “Looks Who’s Back” by the author Timur Vermes.  The novel was published in Germany in 2012 and has sold over a million copies.

This absurd novel based on the premise that Adolf Hitler returns to a modern day Berlin,  has a plot that is far-fetched with the characters cartoon like, but yet the satire is accurate and caustic.   Many Germans felt uneasy about this modern portrayal of Hitler, it is alright to lampoon him and make him a clown , but Hitler as a “man of common sense” is a step too far.  Joe gave a wonderfully insightful presentation to a spellbound gathering -  suggesting   “ that they make up their own mind”.    A soul-searching presentation.. and another unique event for the ROI Center – letting the actor in.   CB

RTÉ's The Late Late Toy Show was the most watched programme on Irish television so far this year.

Friday night’s The Late Late Toy Show was the most watched programme on Irish television so far this year. An average audience of 1.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the entire show, once again proving the show's enduring popularity.

According to figures released by RTÉ, this year’s Jungle Book themed spectacular was even more popular than last year’s and Friday's show had its highest TV audience since 2011.  And the show's popularity wasn't just confined to Ireland. People in 102 countries also joined in the fun on the RTÉ Player in places as far away as the Cayman Islands, Lebanon, Jamaica, Qatar and Nepal.  The top five countries streaming the show overseas were the UK, US, Australia, Spain and Canada.

The Top 10 moments from this year's Late Late Toy Show.

Late Late Toy Show host Ryan Tubridy said he was delighted the show had been such a success.  “We had an absolute ball putting together this year’s Late Late Toy Show and I am really happy to see that people appreciated it in such tremendous numbers. “I didn’t think it was possible to better last year’s show but it is a credit to producer Katherine Drohan, her team and, of course, the children who were the real stars of the show that we were able to pull it off.

This year’s show featured more than 320 young performers and toy demonstrators with surprise guest appearances from Dermot Bannon, Jamie Heaslip and Rory McIlroy.... Well done to all our colleagues ...CB

Commenting on the announcement, Dee Forbes, Director-General RTÉ, said, “Supporting Irish music and Irish musicians is a core part of what RTÉ does and this partnership will allow us to take our support one step further. Through RTÉ2 and RTÉ2FM, two established services with a long and rich history in supporting Irish music, and through our popular online and mobile platforms, RTÉ will put the RTÉ Choice Music Prize at the centre of a campaign that will bring the best Irish artists and songs from the past year to a wider audience”.

'Be3' to Replace UTV Ireland as Part of TV3 Rebrand

TV3’s new look three channel offering will launch on Monday 9th January, 2017 replacing UTV Ireland

be3’s programming schedule is to enhance the TV3 and 3e output and will keep its audience up to date with national and international news with two half hour news bulletins every weekday evening.

News across all three channels will be provided by ‘3 News Ireland’. This newly branded TV3 Group centralised news hub will provide individual news programmes for all three channels. ‘3 News Ireland’ launches on 9th January 2017.

be3 will be home to drama and chat and give viewers a second chance to see soaps and programmes such as ‘Midsomer Murders’, ‘Loose Women’ and ‘Benidorm’.

Speaking at the launch on Tuesday 6th December at The Cliff Townhouse on St. Stephen’s Green, Bill Malone, TV3 Group Director of Programming, said: “Today we give you a first look at the ambitious plans for the TV3 Group. Today’s story is not about a new channel or a new name for a channel. It represents a historic shift in Irish broadcasting. TV3 is now a three channel business and today we unveil three new-look and distinctive brands. Our commitment to Irish programming is clearly evident – we are now an Irish broadcaster of scale.”

TV3 will continue to be the group’s flagship channel, focusing on premium Irish content and acquired programming.

Starting this January, 3e will be home to the ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ franchise. 3e, as the entertainment channel for 15-44s, will also broadcast the ‘Xtra Factor’, ‘Get Me Out of Here Now’, ‘Britain’s Got More Talent’ along with  other programmes such as ‘Graham Norton’ and ‘Jonathan Ross’ as well the UFC.

‘3Kids’, TV3 Group’s daily three hour children’s programming block also moves to be3 from Monday 9th January.

be3 will be available on channel 106 on Virgin Media, channel 116 on Sky, channel 106 on Saorview, channel 108 on Eir’s eVision and channel 106 on Vodafone.

TV3’s new look three channel offering will come into effect from Monday 9th January, 2017.

With thanks to colleague Michael Casey...

Subject: The Kindness of the Irish....

The Irish are always the first ones to come to the aid of their
fellow man...passengers, in this case!

Shortly after take-off on an outbound, evening Air Lingus flight
from Dublin to Boston, the lead flight attendant nervously made the
following painful announcement in her lovely Irish brogue:  ³Ladies and
gentlemen, I'm so very sorry, but it appears that there has been a
terrible mix-up by our catering service.

I don't know how this has happened, but we have 103 passengers on
board, and unfortunately, we received only 40 dinner meals.
I truly apologize for this mistake and inconvenience."

When the muttering of the passengers had died down, she continued,
"Anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else
can eat,
will receive free drinks for the duration of our 10 hour flight.²

Her next announcement came about 2 hours later:

"If anyone is hungry, we still have 40 dinners available."

That's all for now... Have a good week... CB
