RTÉ Staff -  One World Fund Helps Donnybrook African Project

Tony MacDonald,  Sacristan in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook,  brought to our attention the cause of the children of the Parish of Kachibora in Kenya.  Tony first became aware of the needs of the Children when their priest Fr. Julius Shibanda, while studying in Ireland, spent a year in  Donnybrook Parish.  Tony visited Fr. Julius in Kachibora,  which is near Kitale in Western Kenya in 2011 and again in 2015.  He discussed with Donnybrook, Parish Priest Mons. Lorcan O'Brien and members of the pastoral council how they could help Fr. Julius, and they started a collection at the family Mass in Donnybrook, with the idea of 'children helping children' .  The venture was very successful with the collection,  now at about  €150 per month, being collected and sent to Fr. Julius.

Tony assisted a submission to the RTÉ One World Fund, being in Donnybrook Parish, from Fr. Julius in Kachibora, and recently your OWF committee agreed a contribution of €3,000 to St. John's Primary School Project in Kitale in Kenya.  Fr. Julius aims to build three new classrooms and a dormitory and our contribution will be used to start the project and build the dormitory.. Here are some photos that we have received from Fr. Julius.   We will keep you up to date with the project as it progresses.. CB

This is the old Dormitory building that needs renovation..

Fr. Julius and the pupils send their best wishes for Christmas to RTÉ - and the 'RTÉ Staff One World Fund'  members ..

WEE NUDGE

‘Ever say the odd prayer yourself, Sean?

Hmmm… Odd is right. To be honest,

I’m not much of a hand at it –

Sure, I can hardly get through

a Hail Mary without an Alien or two

flitting through my head…

Tell you what, though: I try to find

a quiet space, betimes, search and find him:

In Joseph’s carpentry, shaping wood

with hammer and saw…

Walking a rich pasture, calling to sheep

that know his voice…

At a wedding feast in Galilee,

his mother giving him the elbow,

whispering in his ear, urgently:

“They have no wine…”

By the sea shore, calling men

who would deny and desert him

to be fishers of men…

Exploding in white-hot, righteous anger,

at those who had turned his father’s house

into a den of thieves.

Or – best of all – find him seated at the well

awaiting the Samaritan woman…

I’d sidle up to him, then,

my forehead against his shoulder

and nudge… and again, nudge…

until he’d turn to look at me…

Ne’er a word, then… Just -

 Deep, harrowing sorrow,

limitless forgiveness, unending love…

But does it work? Does it what!

All you need is a heart –

and the neck to nudge ...God made man.

(Many thanks Sean for those profound thoughts ...CB)

Joe Taylor - Royal Television  Society Presentation  to the ROI Centre

We all remember Joe Taylor’s fascinating re-creations of some of the most sensational revelations in the history of the Irish State which provided a unique eyewitness account for a nation gripped by the scandals of political corruption, while also showcasing his own unique talent as an actor.

The extraordinary evidence of the likes of Charles Haughey, Bertie Ahern, James Gogarty, Tom Gilmartin, Ray Burke, Liam Lawlor, George Redmond. Ben Dunne and Frank Dunlop among others was relayed to the nation by Joe’s innovative and precise re- creations.

Although the electronic and print media devoted acres of air time and newsprint to the Tribunals of the ’80 and ‘90s , it was Joe Taylor who gave the evidence a recognisable and easily digested voice.

Well Joe made a facinating  presentation to the RTS ROI  on Tuesday 6th December 2016 titled “TV Blitzkrieg”. The presentation was based almost entirely on the novel “Looks Who’s Back” by the author Timur Vermes.  The novel was published in Germany in 2012 and has sold over a million copies.

This absurd novel based on the premise that Adolf Hitler returns to a modern day Berlin,  has a plot that is far-fetched with the characters cartoon like, but yet the satire is accurate and caustic.   Many Germans felt uneasy about this modern portrayal of Hitler, it is alright to lampoon him and make him a clown , but Hitler as a “man of common sense” is a step too far.  Joe gave a wonderfully insightful presentation to a spellbound gathering -  suggesting   “ that they make up their own mind”.    A soul-searching presentation.. and another unique event for the ROI Center – letting the actor in.  ..CB

Schools Digital Champion Programme

RTÉ today announced its support for the Schools Digital Champion Programme, which encourages secondary school students across Ireland to “think digital, use digital”, by developing a project that demonstrates how their digital skills can be used to make a difference to their school, a local business, or the wider community.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pictured is Eleanor Mannion, Mobile Journalist, RTÉ Newsroom delivering MoJo Training to students participating in Schools Digital Champion training day.

The programme, which is a Department of Communications, Climate Action & Environment and Department of Education & Skills initiative, also enables teachers to integrate technology in the classroom and encourages students to develop their creativity, critical-thinking and communications skills.

RTÉ’s support for the Schools Digital Champion Programme is being led and coordinated by RTÉ’s digital division with wide-ranging support from across the organisation including from RTÉ News, RTÉ Radio, RTÉ Young People’s Programming, RTÉ Technology and RTÉ’s corporate division.

RTÉ’s support for the programme includes:

  • MoJo training for students and a MoJo competition
  • Innovation Day at RTÉ for students
  • Radio and online advertising campaigns
  • Promotion of the programme through RTÉ’s social channels
  • Support for the programme’s showcase event

The Schools Digital Champion programme was first delivered on a pilot basis in 2015/2016, which RTÉ successfully supported. In line with the programme being rolled out on a national basis in 2016 and 2017, RTÉ has this year increased its support.

If you would like to find out more about the programme or if you would like to discuss other ways in which RTÉ can support, please contact Marika MacCarvill, Communications Manager, RTÉ Digital This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

This Month's Archive Photo  Memory 1984

This month’s photo was taken during the filming of an interview for the 1980s’ series ‘Video File’, presented by Marty Whelan, in RTÉ Reception in September 1984. We think Marty is interviewing OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) and producer Ian McGarry can be seen second left, but can you help us to identify anyone else in shot? ( Is Ciaran Tanham the camera man..beside Ian ..?  CB)

Thank you very much to all who contacted us about last month’s ‘Election ‘92’ shot. We have identified everyone as follows, from left to right; David Carroll (carpenter with RTÉ Construction), Pat Molloy (production designer), Pádraig O’Sullivan (RTÉ Construction), Denis O’Callaghan (RTÉ Sound) and Brian Farrell.

AddressPal from An Post allows customers to shop on UK websites who don’t ship to Ireland or to avail of cheaper shipping fees into Ireland. With simple, free, online registration, AddressPal allows An Post customers to make a purchase and have the item shipped to a Post Office of their choice in Ireland, for as little as €3.50.

An Post’s AddressPal service has registered more than 100,000 new users in need of a UK delivery address for shopping on UK websites which won’t ship to the Republic of Ireland, or who charge heavy fees for doing so.

After just seven months in existence and its first Cyber Monday frenzy, AddressPal is already delivering more than 20,000 items a week from its UK hub to “click and collect” points in Post Offices throughout the country – and An Post expects this to increase further over the coming weeks and New Year sales season.

“We’re the new market leader in this segment of the business”, saying An Post Director of Sales and Marketing, Liam Sheehan.  “From a standing start, we hit the ground running in April, saw steady growth all summer but as soon as the UK voted for BREXIT and Sterling took a dive, AddressPal.ie simply took off.   We now have 100,000 registered customers – 50,000 in the last 12 weeks alone – and there’s no sign of it slowing.  Thankfully, capacity isn’t an issue for us, given our infrastructure,” he explained.

“Take-up and usage is beyond anything we could have forecast.   Irish consumers are savy and money conscious and this is a totally customer-led product – they told us to keep it simple, keep it affordable and convenient.   The post office “Click & Collect element is a big hit – customers can choose to collect their shopping near home, near work, near the crèche – it’s all about reliability and saving precious time.”

“Our 2017 plans include the launch of AddressPal from the United States and a home delivery option for all AddressPal shopping.   The Irish love affair with online shopping is just starting.   We’re also working with Irish SMEs and start-ups, helping them to maximise their online presence with the right outward shipping and delivery offerings and we showcase hundreds of Irish brands on our iloveshopping.ie web portal”
