Colleague Rhoda Draper ...Says...

Two of my favourite performing groups, The Irish Baroque Orchestra and Resurgam, are separately presenting

concerts between 11th and 18th February (details attached).  In fact, one could easily attend two of them in the one evening (Saturday 18th) as the IBO Concert is in St. Ann’s, Dawson Street, at 5pm and Resurgam are just down the road in TCD Chapel at 7pm.

More information on the IBO concerts and online booking (Bray and Dublin) can be found here:

Response from Former Head of RTÉ News Wesley Boyd

(Colleague Wesley Boyd ...has asked me to give you his following response to Seamus Dooley's comments in the notice regarding our deceased colleague Eddie Barrett..in last weeks Newsletter... CB )

Seamus,

My old friend and colleague Eddie Barrett's record of dedicated
service to the NUJ needs no embellishment by fanciful tales of
derring-do. I was Head of News in RTE in 1974 when you claim, in your
comments on his death, that he was instructed that he could not
report Rose Dugdale's comments from the dock at the end of her trial
for a number of offences. Tom McCaughren covered that trial for RTE
News. He reported on air that Dugdale ignored the court and "as she
left Dugdale looked at the public gallery and muttered that there were
still four people on hunger strike in England and an army of
occupation in a small part of Ireland but not for long." This account
can be checked in the RTE Archives.

I have no recollection of Eddie or any other union officer organising
the blacking of court coverage until RTÉ agreed that courts would
not be subject to Section 31 restrictions, as you state. Court
reporting never presented a problem under the restrictions and , in any
case, it would not have been within RTÉ's remit to reach such an
agreement within the terms of the Government order under Section 31 of
the Broadcasting Act.

I trust you will keep these facts in mind in any further comments on
Eddie's untimely death.

Best Regards,

Wesley Boyd
Life Member.

Latest Photos RTÉ Staff One World Fund -  Donnybrook / Kachibora Project

Dormitory building in St Johns school in Kachibora under construction supported by the RTÉ Staff One World Fund..

(Many thanks to Tony McDonald for the Photos from Fr Julius..)

Tony MacDonald,  Sacristan in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook,  brought to our attention the cause of the children of the Parish of Kachibora in Kenya.  Tony first became aware of the needs of the Children when their priest Fr. Julius Shibanda, while studying in Ireland, spent a year in  Donnybrook Parish.  Tony visited Fr. Julius in Kachibora,  which is near Kitale in Western Kenya in 2011 and again in 2015.  He discussed with Donnybrook, Parish Priest Mons. Lorcan O'Brien and members of the pastoral council how they could help Fr. Julius, and they started a collection at the monthly family Mass in Donnybrook, with the idea of 'children helping children' .  The venture was very successful with the collection,  now at about  €150 per month, being collected and sent to Fr. Julius.

Tony assisted a submission to the RTÉ One World Fund, being in Donnybrook Parish, from Fr. Julius in Kachibora, and recently your OWF committee agreed a contribution of €3,000 to St. John's Primary School Project in Kitale in Kenya.  Fr. Julius aims to build a dormitory and our contribution will be used to start the project and build the dormitory.. Here are some photos that we have received from Fr. Julius.   We will keep you up to date with the project as it progresses.. CB

Fr. Julius and the pupils send their best wishes to the 'RTÉ Staff One World Fund'  and to RTÉ ..

Joint update from RTÉ and the RTÉ Sports and Social Club ...

Update Meetings for RTÉ Sports and Social Club Members

As members will be aware, RTÉ and the RTÉ Sports and Social Club are currently engaged in mediation regarding an alternate location for the club towards the Nutley end of the site.

Following last week’s staff update from RTÉ’s Director-General, Dee Forbes confirming RTÉ’s decision to sell a portion of underutilised land on our Donnybrook site, west of the Radio Centre and our recent email and notice board update to RTÉ Club members, we would like to remind all members that both parties have scheduled 3 information sessions for last week upstairs in the bar area.

  • These sessions took place as follows...
  • Wednesday 1st February at 13.00

  • Wednesday 1st February at 19.00

  • ( Photos from this session Below )

  • Sunday 5th February at 16:00

  • (Photos from this session now added..here)
  •

Having worked with the Club Committee (with the assistance of a mediator) over the past few months to develop options for future of the Club, at each information session, RTÉ will present a proposal for alternative sports and social facilities to members. After the presentation the RTÉ Club Committee will hold a closed meeting for feedback and discussion with its members.

Niamh Farren , Brian Gilroy and Paul Silke ( Representing RTÉ)

Marguerite Sheridan, John Reynolds and Douglas Mc Cann ( RTÉ Sports and Social Club)

Some  members attending the 19.00  Hrs session on February 1st 2017..

Plans were displayed for members at the meetings.

At a later date members will vote on the RTÉ proposal at a meeting convened as per the Club Constitution.

Plans relating to the RTÉ proposal are currently available for inspection on the Club's notice board..

Retransmission Fees Should Be Paid To RTÉ By Pay TV Operators

Findings from a new report commissioned by RTÉ and conducted by consultants in the UK Mediatique, has concluded that: “RTÉ could expect up to €19m from Sky and €11m from Virgin.”

These findings are in relation to retransmission costs that should be paid to the broadcaster by the pay TV operators who carry the RTÉ channels.  This new information regarding retransmission costs within the report has come to light, after an initial refusal was appealed under the Freedom of Information act  by the Sunday Independent. According to research undertaken in the report: “Pay-TV operators Sky and Virgin Media should pay RTÉ up to €30m a year in order to carry its channels.” The Sunday Independent also reports that: “49pc of respondents to research said they would leave Sky if it did not carry free-to-air channels such as RTÉ and TV3, while 63pc said they would leave Virgin, formerly known as UPC. Many of those who would stay with the service would expect discounts if the channels were not available.” Other Irish broadcaster such as TG4 and TV3 are also said to benefit from retransmission costs based on a detailed analysis of the financial benefit to Sky and Virgin of carrying free-to-air stations. An RTÉ spokesman is reported to have said: "Across a number of countries now, much fairer systems exist whereby terrestrial broadcasters can negotiate fair compensation for the significant value they create for TV platforms." He added that a "rebalancing" of Ireland's legislation was overdue.

Minister for Communications Denis Naughten is currently reviewing Irish broadcasting legislation and is considering introducing retransmission fees. The previously unpublished report by Mediatique was completed at the end of 2014. The full article posted in the Sunday Independent can be found online here.

Lighthouse Studios to be launched by Cartoon Saloon & Mercury Filmworks

The joint venture which will focus on 2D animation will create one hundred and forty jobs in Kilkenny between here and 2020 is supported by the IDA and the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

Professionals hired will be animators, compositors, designers, effects artists, IT administrators, technical directors, 3D modelers, lighting artists, riggers and texture artists.

Minister for Jobs, Mary Mitchell has commended the launch as proof that Ireland has the creative talent to attract companies like the Canadian Mercury Filmworks to Ireland.

Though specialising in 2D animation there will also be some CGI integration at Lighthouse Studios which will produce children’s and family animated content.

It will operate independently from both Cartoon Saloon and Mercury Filmworks, with a management team reporting to a board of directors, made up of executives from both companies.

Mercury Filmworks CEO Clint Eland has praised how Cartoon Saloon’s goals, perspectives and philosophies complement their own and its status as one of Ireland’s most creative and well-respected animation companies.

Cartoon Saloon has produced  Oscar-nominated projects such as ‘Song of the Sea’ (2015) and ‘The Secret of Kells’ (2010), with ‘The Breadwinner’ also scheduled for release this year. Mercury Filmworks is a leading independent Canadian studio and has worked on high profile projects such as Disney’s animated series ‘Tangled’.

Paul Young, CEO, Cartoon Saloon:
“All of us at Cartoon Saloon are delighted to be in partnership with Mercury, as we have long admired their work. And now, together, we plan to make Lighthouse Studios and Kilkenny a centre of excellence for animation.

“Ireland enjoys a number of advantages when it comes to animation. The industry is supported by a growing number of educational programs and draws talent from all over Europe due to the quality of projects being produced here. The Irish talent pool has been spilling over into other parts of Europe and North America for years and we look forward to welcoming a lot of that talent home.”

Clint Eland, Mercury Filmworks CEO:
“Lighthouse Studios is neither wholly Mercury Filmworks nor Cartoon Saloon, but rather the best parts of each, transplanted in the rich Irish soil and nurtured by its own talented team of artists into a studio with its own unique and distinct creative perspective.”
