18 February 2017 - The Royal Television Society (RTS) ROI Centre held its annual Student Television Awards in Studio One at the RTÉ Television Centre in Donnybrook, Dublin on Wednesday 17th February 2017.
The Awards, which recognise the best in student television, were presented by Dee Forbes, RTÉ Director General, in five categories: Animation, Short Feature, Factual, Comedy & Entertainment and Drama.
The award in the Animation Category was presented to Sean Cunningham, Paul Kavanagh, Padraic Byrne, Nicole Storck and team from the Irish School of Animation, Ballyfermot College of Further Education for ‘Define Intervention’. The jury admired this rapid and irreverent film, which takes a unique look at the catholic religion in today’s world. They said the original scripting and placing of witty set pieces immediately conveyed a well-crafted animation with great attention to detail and unique comedy.
Noel Aungier, also from Ballyfermot College of Further Education, took home the award in the Comedy & Entertainment Category for ‘Trixi’, which the jury described as a lively, narrative piece encompassing the world of magic with music, movement and charm. They agreed that the eponymous Trixi deserved full accolades for her acting, dancing and stage presentation and felt that good planning and production was evident in this creative piece.
The award in the Short Feature Category went to Jordan Murshed and Eoin Duggan from National Film School, IADT, Dun Laoghaire for ‘Vitruvius’. The jury highlighted the film’s strong opening graphics, effective score and sound effects. They said the background set of the famous drawing of Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci worked well and the gentle surprise ending made this an unusual creative piece.
The award in the Factual Category also went to National Film School, IADT, Dun Laoghaire students. Laura Gaynor and Luke Brabazon took home the award for ‘When the Butcher Stopped Ordering Meat’. The jury agreed that the self-deprecating sense of humour of central figure, Michael Quirke, came over very well. They felt good planning was evident, with significant opening and closing sequences, cutaway shots and that the warm congenial atmosphere was maintained throughout.
Commenting on this year’s award entries, Charles Byrne, Chairman of the RTS Republic of Ireland Centre, said “The ROI Jury was delighted to have such a high number of entries again this year in the five categories. They were very impressed with the standard of the work of the Students and they wish the nominees well in the National Awards in London in June.”

ONE GUTHRIE IN W.W.2: FROM DUNKIRK TO BELFAST
Lecture by colleague TV Producer/Director Christopher Fitz-Simon
Former TV Producer/Director Christopher Fitz-Simon will be giving a public lecture at the RDS on 12 April entitled TYRONE GUTHRIE IN W.W.2: FROM DUNKIRK TO BELFAST.
Tyrone Guthrie was an eminent Irish theatre director. On the outbreak of W.W.2 he was placed in charge of the Sadler’s Wells Opera and Ballet and the Old Vic Theatre Company and entrusted with keeping them employed during the lüftwaffe blitz on London. He hired the Victoria Theatre in Burnley, Lancashire, plus several factory floors where the companies rehearsed before opening in the theatre prior to touring to venues out of range of bombing. Over 200 dancers, singers, actors and musicians were involved. Accommodation was found in private homes, and transport to all kinds of unlikely destinations. Huge audiences appeared as if from nowhere.
This talk makes use of Guthrie’s private letters to his mother at Annaghmakerrig, Co Monaghan, and his sister, Mrs Hubert Butler in Kilkenny. The material – never before seen – contains descriptions of the primitive conditions and the warm receptions, involving artists such as Ninette de Valois, Sybil Thorndike, Joan Cross, Robert Helpmann, Lewis Casson, Alec Guinness, Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier, etc etc. In spite of the privation and uncertainties of the times Guthrie’s observations on war news and politics – including the Irish Free State’s neutrality – are highly entertaining.
Opening times and admission: Wednesday Apr. 12, 2017, at 6.30 p.m. sharp in the R.D.S. Library.
The talk will last 50 minutes, after which questions will be welcomed, followed by light refreshments.
Admission free (and free parking) but booking is recommended on 01 2407254, or online https://www.rds.ie/Whats-On/Event/30569.
The Library door is on the right of the main RDS entrance on Merrion Road, Dublin 4.

Start the week with a smile..
From colleague Maurice Byrne...
He asks him, "George, what can I do to best serve the United States?"
The ghost of George Washington responds, "Never tell a lie."
He says, "Oh, I don't think I can do that."
The next night, he is visited by the ghost of Thomas Jefferson.
He asks him, "Tom, what can I do to best serve the United States?"
The ghost of Thomas Jefferson responds, "Do not bully the people."
He says, "Oh, I don't think I can do that."
On the third night, he is visited by the ghost of Abraham Lincoln.
He asks him, "Abe, what can I do to best serve the United States?"
Go see a Play.....!!
At dawn the telephone rings,
"Hello, Señor Bob? This is Ernesto, the caretaker at your country house."
"Ah yes, Ernesto. What can I do for you? Is there a problem?"
"Um, I am just calling to advise you, Señor Bob, that your parrot, he is dead".
"My parrot? Dead? The one that won the International competition?"
"Si, Señor, that's the one."
"Damn! That's a pity! I spent a small fortune on that bird. What did he die from?"
"From eating the rotten meat, Señor Bob."
"Rotten meat? Who the hell fed him rotten meat?"
"Nobody, Señor. He ate the meat of the dead horse."
"Dead horse? What dead horse?"
"The thoroughbred, Señor Bob ..."
"My prize thoroughbred is dead?"
"Yes, Señor Bob, he died from all that work pulling the water cart."
"Are you insane? What water cart?"
"The one we used to put out the fire, Señor."
"Good Lord! What fire are you talking about, man?"
"The one at your house, Señor! A candle fell and the curtains caught onfire."
"What the hell? Are you saying that my mansion is destroyed because of a candle?!"
"Yes, Señor Bob."
"But there's electricity at the house! What was the candle for?"
"For the funeral, Señor Bob ..."
"WHAT BLOODY FUNERAL??!!"
"Your wife's, Señor Bob. She showed up very late one night and I thought she was a thief,
so I hit her with your new Ping G15 204g titanium head golf club with the TFC 149D graphite shaft."
SILENCE...........
LONG SILENCE.........
VERY LONG SILENCE............
"Ernesto, if you broke that driver, you're in deep shit."..
Many thanks to colleague Janet Wynne for the above..CB
