Colleague John Curran St Patrick Day Reflection..

For me It's been a most enjoyable day . I'm a card carrying athiest and have never been a church goer but it's well known that there are exceptions to every rule . Music for those with ears to hear , transcends all questions of belief or lack of it . So to hear choral music sung by a choir of stunning quality , it's necessary to pop into Clarendon St church for 11.00 mass on Sunday ( today was also 11.00 .) It's  made up of senior music students with a leavening of seasoned professionals . Today it emerged that a baritone from Hungary and a tenor from Germany had spent the last week studying Irish to sing one of today's pieces -- by O'Riada -- as Gaeilge ! There was also an interesting piece for Uillean pipes and church organ -- a duo that would a rarity -- and , it worked to perfection.

Then , with the thirst of one suitably sanctified , it was time for Davy Byrnes and the company of friends of old -- some home from far flung places -- others , no farther than the end of a phone line who get together because of the day that's in it .
There were suggestions to move the party to the RDS but being sanctified , even after a few pints , I sensibly hopped on the Luas to Carrickmines and got home for the under 20's .  The round trip had taken about 6 hours .
And here I am past midnight writing about it.  Was it that good ?  Must have been . Anyway , to all my F/B friends , please join me in a final toast .
Hail Glorious St Patrick . ( Many thanks to John for the above.. CB)

RTÉ Sports and Social Club...EGM

Dear Members,

A few thoughts from Marguerite,Johnand Douglas regarding recent Club events.

We would like to thank each and every member for supporting our Club and attending the recent information sessions.

Undoubtedly we are facing a massive time of change in the history of our Club. The Clubhouse is not just another bricks and mortar type facility. It is a real Club, it is a living Club and it is a harvester of emotion and sentiment for our members. Our institution has played a part in the everyday lives of people who have come and gone from RTÉ.

During the first set of member informationsessionswe listened to you. We went back to RTÉ armed with your feedback, which corroborated what we had beenrelayingto RTÉ, againemphasisingthe strong requirement for a staff voice on campus. We believe there is an intrinsic need for a members Club on campus to help build social relationships alongside professional RTÉ relationships.

Our Community has developed alongside RTÉ since 1961 and it is in both of our interests to work towards a successful venture for our members, who are employed by RTÉ and have retired from RTÉ.  We are keenly aware of the commercial landscape and challenges which face RTÉ. In every challenge there isopportunityandwe have put our best foot forwardto represent your interests and improve the length of tenure on site.

We have fought hard and put in long hours to drive the origin of RTÉ’s relocation proposal, and we believe this is the only game in town for our Club members. During the most recent sessions we outlined an alternative reality, should the relocation proposal fail to pass. We have fought the good fight and we believe the alternative reality brought about by a no vote to this proposal will lead to the demise of the Club. The current Club Officers will not be continuing on to manage a process of rapid decline.

Although we have not seen eye to eye with RTÉ on every single point relating to the Club, we must stress that the interests of our members have been steered in the right direction. We must strongly acknowledge that RTÉ has come to the table and delivered a relocation proposal which will provide security while RTÉ remains onsite, and will also enable us to grow the interests of our Club and members.

We fully recommend and approve the improved relocation proposal for the Club.

We have brought this proposal as far as possible and we need boots on the ground to vote infavour of this proposal.

We need 100 Ordinary members to complete the EGM voting on the night of Wednesday 15 March 2017 at 19:30, but we need a lot more Ordinary members to attend.

Please do not assume that we will have the numbers and everything will be alright on the night. If you do not attend, it won't.

We are appealing to members to turn up and vote for the proposal.  Please canvass all members to attend this critical vote for our Club.

We wish members all the best and look forward to seeing you on the night of Wednesday 15 March 2017.

We will be validating members from 19:00 but the bar will be open from 17:30 with light refreshments provided.

Yours sincerely,

Douglas McCann, Secretary

John Reynolds, Vice Chair

Marguerite Sheridan.

THE SHOWER OF PEARLS

Fionnuala Hunt, violin

Úna Hunt, piano

Featuring violin and piano music by leading Irish composers and instrumentalists of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. These include Limerick’s own pianist-composer, George Alexander Osborne who left Ireland as a young man and gained fame as one of the favoured performers in the famous Parisian salons of the 1830s and 40s. The Italian pianist, Michele Esposito, made his home in Ireland with his appointment as professor of piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music where he left behind an important piano legacy. Another professor of the Academy whose music is completely unknown was the gifted but ill-fated Fanny Robinson. Completing the programme is violin and piano music by Charles Villiers Stanford.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

Gillian Williams, violin

Arun Rao, cello

Úna Hunt, piano

In the 19th century, France – and especially Paris – was a place of desire for so many composers across Europe, not least for the Irish. Many sought tuition and performance opportunities, and quite a few spent extended periods of their career there. This programme explores little-known Franco-Irish musical connections through the extraordinary O’Kelly family: Henri, Joseph and George along with music for violin and cello by another composer worthy of attention, Swan Hennessy. Then, there’s the unique Augusta Holmès who was France’s first really significant female composer; her father came from Youghal in Co Cork. Rounding off the programme are piano trios from Irish musicians who lived in Paris for extended periods. The pianist-composer from Limerick, George Alexander Osborne, performed with Chopin at his famous debut recital in the Salle Pleyel and became one of the most favoured salon performers. Michael William Balfe was one of Ireland’s most noted opera composers; while his Bohemian Girl remains popular, his instrumental music is almost unknown. The final concert of the series - The French Connection - provides a rare opportunity to hear these little-known works while exploring the intersections between the music of Ireland and France.
